Plot
Partenope is a woman who bears the name of her city. In Greek myths, Partenope is a mermaid who committed suicide after failing to charm Odysseus.
In the film, Partenope is the embodiment of the city of Naples

However, there are still questions that we are not ready to know the answers to, because we have not gone through suffering and only suffering is the key to understanding
That’s what I love about Sorrentino, that his films are like a book of a thousand existential questions that collide like electrons in the atom of our consciousness, trying to find our own integrity. Partenope is exactly the kind of film that makes us ask so many questions: what do we think when our gaze rises; what is it to not use the beauty you are gifted with, and what price will you pay for it; what is the power of love when we are young; how do you carry the burden of being smarter than others and that makes you anomalous or simply a sad and misunderstood person; has love failed as a means of survival; when is it time to leave; what personal freedom becomes when you put it in a cage.
And in Naples, as we see, there are many of them
Partenope is a sad film in which personal freedom is forced to be imprisoned in order to survive and not be killed by a tyrannical, retrograde society whose only main occupation is to judge everyone with the iron hammer of its prejudices and traditions. A small hell in a seeming paradise, where not everyone survives.
It’s important not to judge anyone, lest you be judged!
